Apple Starts Work on iPhone 18 Pro’s Biggest Camera Change Yet

iPhone 18 Pro variable aperture

Apple is preparing to introduce one of its most meaningful camera upgrades yet, and early signs show that production is already moving forward. The supply chain for the variable aperture camera, expected to debut in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup this September, has officially begun operations. According to the source, ET News, from South Korea, Sunny Optical has started manufacturing key actuators required for the new camera system

For the users, the variable aperture is the hardware part of the smartphone that changes the physical size. It controls how much light reaches the sensor and adjusts the depth of field. It enhances low-light photography and sharpens the images. The change may only come to Pro models due to its cost, and the regular iPhone 18 may not see it.

This marks the first time Apple will use variable aperture technology in an iPhone. Unlike fixed-aperture systems used in previous models, this new setup can adapt to different lighting conditions in real time. In bright environments, it can reduce light intake to avoid overexposure, while in low-light situations, it can open wider to capture more detail.

An industry insider revealed that LG Innotek is expected to begin mass production of camera modules around June or July. The company has reportedly installed specialized equipment at its Gumi facility to handle this new technology, signaling Apple’s serious commitment to scaling production ahead of launch.

Typically, camera modules enter mass production two to three months before a device release. However, components like actuators begin production even earlier, which aligns with the current timeline. This suggests that Apple is on track for its usual September launch window.

The supply chain structure remains similar to previous years, but with added complexity due to the new technology. Sunny Optical and Luxshare ICT are responsible for producing the variable aperture actuators. These components are then supplied to module manufacturers such as LG Innotek and Cowell, which assemble them into complete camera units.

Because variable aperture is a more advanced and mechanically complex system, manufacturing challenges are expected. This could lead to a higher reliance on LG Innotek, which has a strong track record with Apple’s premium camera systems. A similar pattern was seen during the launch of the periscope-style folded zoom camera in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, where LG Innotek initially served as the sole supplier.

The new variable aperture system will be integrated into the main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which are expected to feature a triple-camera setup. The news doesn’t confirm whether variable aperture will come to iPhone Ultra, because its existence is still in the rumor mill. By introducing this technology, Apple aims to deliver sharper images, improved depth control, and better performance across different lighting scenarios.

As Apple continues to push the boundaries of smartphone photography, the introduction of variable aperture could become a major highlight of the iPhone 18 Pro series. The iPhone competitors like Samsung and Google have yet to come up with this idea on their next Galaxy S27 Ultra and Pixel Phones.
